you'll pay the back tax though. it wont be 6 or 12 month from the day you pay, it'l be from the day it ran out.
have not got money in a bank account, you can pay online
can also pay for it early for future reference

I had a look and there's a couple of answers:
quote: You get 14 days to renew or declare SORN before an automatic fine is generated.
However, if you use your car during these 14 days (or it is parked on a public road) you can be prosecuted for failure to display a valid tax disc. The 14 days only applies if the car is kept off the road.
and
quote: Before the system was fully computerized you used to get a week or two's period of grace. Not any more. Come the 1st of the month that the tax is due, if it's not taxed or SORN, an £80 fine is on its way to you. (And you still have to pay the tax.)
quote:
To actually get this right for you, if your car is on the public highway there is NO grace period, and never has been officially.
This rumour grew up in the days when it was all done by hand and the authorities didn't bother to do anything about it if you were reported before a fortnight had gone by.
It is ONLY if your car is off the road that you have a 14 day period before they pursue you to either tax it or SORN it. You are still technically illegal as soon as either the tax or SORN has run out.
Did you know you can do it online, up to and including the 31st? You don't have to dig out your MoT or insurance certificate, as that will be checked automatically while you're actually at it. Once you've done that and they've confirmed it a recent change in the law gives you 5 days to allow for the disc to come in the post.
You cannot tax online once the present tax has expired.
If your friend is on the road with an expired tax she's running a big risk, as with computerisation they can tell immediately what the position is and if DVLA are carrying out one of their "purges" she's likely to have the car seized on the spot.

"You cannot tax online once the present tax has expired".
That bit isn't true, I recently taxed my van which was over by about a week.
You'll get a reminder letter through the post before they take any action anyway and since it's off the road you aren't going to be flagged by police or the DVLA vans.

This, no point paying tax on a car that isn't being driven.

Technically no grace period.
I SORN'd mine although it would only be a few days, not worth risking it.
You can SORN online in a few minutes.
I then couldn't tax it online and had to go to a PO branch to do it which was a pain in the ass but it was all legal.
Also - use a different car to go to the PO.

Post office is pretty impossible for me, work nowhere near one and leave home before mine is open and get back when it's shut can you normally retax online after SORN? Was yours an exceptional case ian

No idea, was only three days after SORN was declared though.
In reality you should be fine but I wouldn't trust those fine happy bastards, I've been done when SORN was first introduced for a car in bits on a shelf despite sending the paperwork off.
