Yes, I'd guess everyone's 1 year trial of whatsapp was up and they didnt want to spend 59p so went with the new one?

I use SMS but I have so many mates in different countries it would cost me a fortune to SMS them all the time!!

Not a virus, it accesses your contact list without your permission (hence random adds etc). Still a load of wank however.
