I'm looking at getting a new car and I spotted one I like. Guy said the car was involved in a crash and was wrote off then reshelled with a brand new shell when doing a hpi check the car still comes back as a cat b only to be used as parts.
Shouldnt the car of got a new reg before being allowed back on the road?

Does the VIN on the chassis match that on the HPI check and V5?
Although all of that is purely out of interest, I'd still just walk away.

I think there is a chance that it could be legit but finding out for definite would probably be a mission in itself so I'd be walking away too.

tom I've not seen the car yet. Just seen it listed.
It was built by pumabuild as their old demo car. I dont doubt its been reshelled just think odd it still kept the old reg. Lad says its not listed as a write off on the v5 though

Cat B? Cat B is break only. Never to see the road again!! Sure he didn't say Cat D?
Only Cat C and D are allowed back on the road. Cat C shows on V5 and requires a VIC check where as Cat D doesn't.

Hmm. That's the sort of car that could be stolen and on false vin plates.
I know any car can be, but they are desirable cars. Is it a lot cheaper than others same age/spec.

You'll have problems with that simply because there is no provision to legally run that car on the road.
Whether it's been re-shelled or not, the ID is what carries the categorisation. If it had a new shell and used old parts then it would be assigned another number plate of the age of the proportion of the donor bits. If the age couldn't be determined it would go on a Q plate.
Sounds like it's been done on the quiet and the DVLA aren't even aware of it, I would walk away personally. And that is coming from someone who deals in salvage and isn't afraid of a bit of history. Just think you'll have problems with that one.

I had a corsa that was an absolute death trap, Hpi checked it and turned out that it was a CAT B back in 2006, passed its Vic check and somehow ended up back on the road :s
All the VIN numbers on the shell matched the originals. I would never buy a write off ever again personally.

If its on a private plate it will have a cat marker against the plate but it will tell you the vehicle it was on when it happened.
HPI'd a car that was on a private plate and it showed me he'd written off an astra a few years previous.
Edit: That one in question seems dodgy though. Could try asking puma build?
Another edit: which reg did you use? the one from the mag or the one from the show pic?

The PH ad doesnt even hint at it being a write off, lol. Dodgy as fook.
And im not one to shy away from write offs, my last corsa was a cat c that i got VIC'd and back on the road. If it passes a VIC then you're good to go. Question is how has that managed to pass a VIC if its a cat b, should have neer left the crushers...
*EDIT* - actually it does, i should learn to read, ignore me.

You don't NEED a VIC to be on the road tho, you just need a VIC to be able to get a new logbook so you can get tax. If you've still got the logbook then the post office will tax it no questions. Probs a similar thing.

If you reshell you have to leave existing vin and weld old shells vin at side , also that never hardly happens . Usually if rolled there a cat b and you can't ever get it back on road, ive repaired some right hits I.e new roof back ends put new floor on one roof on another but never re shelled and wouldn't dream
Of it inless car was worth mega money , insurance company's know what there on about if there a c or d they will pull straight .got a polo in at moment and legs are well over but lad who jigs them does a good job which is half of battle. If numberplate comes up as cat b it'll never go on road, if shell was a b but v5 is c or d that will be ok. If it's a c they will want to know where the shell come from.
