I'm moving to New Zealand for a year and want to carry on my insurance, so am unsure what is the best kind of car to leave unused. I will SORN it, but
At present my fiance has a seat leon tdi (2003) and don't think it will last standing - it's struggling to start now, so will need to be changed.
Is it possible to have a car that will stand for 12 months unused? If I have £2-3000 what is best? It needs to be reliable, decentish size (baby on the way)

12months standing on a modern normal car is fine.
wen you get back just crank it over with the crank sensor unplugged to build oil pressure again and check for any leaks from coolant and fuel.
anything diesel is probably the best bet, whats wrong with what you have now other than struggling to start, why not just get it checked over and then relax that you know the fuel history with it

Or you could buy a £100 shitter and just leave that standing. Then when you return just scrap it. Saves having a good car going to waste.

nothing wrong with the car now. Just the struggle to turn over on a cold morning puts me off.
Yes, it will be in my parents garage when we're away, so they can turn it over from time to time.
Thought about the shitter, but when my partner goes on maternity leave we were planning on changing it then, so it will be used for 4-5 months.
Why is a diesel best?

Yeah, both going. She's from there so moving there for first year baby is here.
It runs fine otherwise and starts better in warm - could that be the battery?

So changing cars in a few months is irrelevant anyway as you wont be here? Sell what you have, buy something cheap to keep insurance going on, and then get rid and get something else when you get back.

i had a mate tell me you can fill the engine right up with oil, until no more goes in and leave it like that?

We aren't going until Nov. Baby is due July so my partner is stopping work in May. Either way a car is needed between now and then, and for NCB I want to leave one here.

id just keep what you have and leave that in the garage.. leaving it a yr isnt going to damage it, your more than likely just going to have a scrap battery.

sell that, and get a shitter like suggested.
even if you get something for £500 that still leaves £2000 and that has got to towards the prices of the flights (a quick search for flights shows prices in excess of £1500/person)
if it is left sat for a year, as as you say garaged it will be in the same state you received it in.
providing it passes an MOT i can't see why after a year with no miles on the clock it wouldnt pass another. rust won't be a problem as it is garage won't be exposed to weather.
my suggestions for leaving a car sat for a "long" period of time:
disconnect the battery
leave the handbrake off and chock the wheels
fit old tyres you don't care about, sitting on the same flat spot will do the tyre no good (little concerns on a £500 shitter as it is unlikely to be fitted with 18 inch £130/corner rubber!
Alternatively pump up the tyres up to maintain pressure throughout the year.
rais ethe wipers of the glass to avoid sticking
when you get back to the car check everything including fluid levels and brake pedal engages, get the oil changed and fill up with a premium grade fuel
suggested "shitter" (local to Sunderland postcode)

for £399 it comes with a full years MOT i suspect will be low insurance and tax, and you'll be able to see the car for what yo bought it for in a year with the relatively low mileage for age

The fuel can 'go off' after a while - don't leave the tank brimmed so there's room to top it up with some new stuff when you get back. The battery may go flat and if left discharged for a log time it will die. Either leave it on a trickle charger or just replace it when you get back. If there is any moisture in the car mould will grow everywhere, especially on the steering wheel so give everything a good clean before you go.

I was thinking the same as Twiggy, the amount you'll spend on insurance is surely going to outweigh the savings from one extra year NCB. Sell it and get something else when you come back imo.
