I bought a shell jacket today from Go Outdoors, it was called North Ridge (which is clearly a close brand name to North Face). I picked it up reluctantly.
I can safely say that as a keen hiker and The North Face devotee with a cupboard full of technical wear, this jacket I bought is bloody brilliant! The taped seams are really well bonded and strong, the material is light and well made, the fit is really good and its been well thought of. I've even had it in the shower to see how the waterproofing was and again, top marks. The hood is good, the zips are made to not allow water ingress and feel strong and the draw cords are firm.
If anyone is looking for a good outer shell jacket this winter, I challenge you to buy one and find a fault!

I bought the yellow one because of visibility if anyone asks.
£89 from Go-Outdoors.

True, but im glad it doesnt have The North Face price tag.
I was looking at a Berghaus Attrition a while ago, almost identical spec. It was £250.

North Ridge is an expensive and well known brand as far as I'm aware.
That jacket retails at the prices you are baulking at for North Face.

I need a new outer shell layer. My current NF is a bit fucked now. But I'm a brand whore so I'll be getting another NF.

Its in the sale now. It was 'reduced' from £240, but we all know when they write that its bullshit.

I looked at north face outer shells and got a marmot instead. North face isn't bad but there's better stuff available.

I have loads of TNF stuff and its always my first choice but I took a chance on this occasion and can say i'm impressed by the alternatives.

Was thinking you meant Mammut. I'd never heard of marmot tbh.

You must all shop in the wrong place for North Face stuff.
Best place price wise I have found is this place http://www.gaynors.co.uk/
I use it all the time for jackets, shoes etc. Try stuff on in shops for size then order it from them.
My latest North Face jacket Evo triclimate was £175 in Blacks, £99 from them.

That's part of the reason I got it, won't catch any riff raff with it on.
