Just seen someone on the book of face havin a discussion about the numbers on a toaster. Some saying that it represents time, some saying it represents heat...
My opinion is it is time, as a toaster reaches maximum temperature and cannot be controlled, thus meaning that the higher the number, the longer it stays down for...
Opinions?

It is time.
Simply place it on number one and see how long it takes.
Place it on number 6 and see how long it takes.

difficult to get right without wasting bread with trial and error

Package it up, brand it as "Well fired slice of bread", send it up to scotland, profit.

You need to have some reference to Scotland in the name or at the very least a Scottish flag on the packaging.

Got a timer on mind which goes up in increments of 30secs, usually a pain in the arse to get decent toast and 9/10 ends up being a little burnt
Also i wouldn't have thought using a grill is being 'posh', rather pikies who can't afford a toaster

No because you have to turn the bread over when it's in the grill.

why cant toasters have instead of numbers a burnt scale, with black at the top, white at the bottom, and inbetween various lile tanned etc, would make much more sense, numbers dont mean anything

How is a number scale different from a colour scale?
Black is just the highest number.
