Approximately 3-4 months ago work told me they'd signed me onto a training course one evening that I needed to attend. It was out of work hours but I didn't mind and went.
Yesterday I was handed an overdue invoice for the course, and basically told I have to pay for my place on the course. This was never said to me prior to attending. Where do I stand? Do I have to pay? Should work not pay?

Who gave you the invoice? The training company or your workplace?
At my place they either invoice me and I claim everything back through expenses, or I get the invoices issued to the AP dept of my company and they're paid that way.
Bit out of order them sending you on a course and expecting you to pay without warning you.

Did you not ask the person who handed you the invoice?

If you had to attend it then surely the company should pay for it?

The company holding the course forwarded invoice to my company, who gave it to a colleague of mine, who kept it in her pocket for a couple of weeks, then handed it to me yesterday

Did they actually say you personally have to pay it? Maybe they gave you the invoice so you can submit an expenses claim?

Tbh that's a bit fucking cheeky of them, unless this is a course to bring you up to speed with something you have told them you have but actually didn't then I would be claiming the time to/during/from the course also...
Who the better off in this scenario? I garenatee the employer...

We don't do expenses claims lol, it was given to me to pay.
Was a child protection course, I'm ex-police. I knew more on the subject than the woman holding the course which was more irritating

Do you have any documentation relating to the policy in this case?
Were you told beforehand this would happen?
My feeling is that you shouldn't pay unless it is a condition of a contract.
