can this be done?
this is a conventional imp set up
this is what i plan to do
im just really wondering, its called a trailing arm because its meant to trail imo? how would running it in reverse effect handling and the safety aspect?
if i cant reverse the rear suspension set up i will need to make some sort of subframe/custom set up...
the other way would be to adapt some corsa hubs to use a custom subframe which id bet isnt all that simple. to lock them off ect

I would of thought it wouldnt be a good idea.
Would the forces be pulling it away from the body??
Rather that going towards the body if you see what I mean.
Space frame?

Semi frame and bolt in cradle..
Should add I have the gearbox from the car the x16 came from. The f20 was when I made the example and was planning a c20

Looking at where the engine is and the angle of shafts I don't think you should do it.
What's wrong with the engine over the rear wheels?

the shafts would be made to run near enough the same as they do on a corsa with corsa hubs on a cradle type set up i think so far..
this is my thread about mounting in the rear.. its just too complicated for me to do, even though it would be amazing

I didn't mean like that.
Have a look at a vx220 set up. Thats what I'm on about. Should be able to use the imps trailing arms the correct way round.
Height may be an issue though.

Do you mean run the engine directly above the wheels? That would be amazing if its possible. I'm leaving stripping underseal for a bit till engines mounted ECT now so it won't be long till progress is made. I will get the engine stripped to what I need for now and then weigh up if that's possible as the standard set up is narrow

The fact that the axle 'trails' helps it deal with bumps, I can see it being under a lot more stress doing what you're suggesting.
Imagine you had a pencil glued fast to a table - if you were to sit your fingertips on the surface and drag them over the pencil (ie. knuckles first with your fingers 'trailing') they would pass over no problem. Do the same thing whilst angling your hand the other way (ie. palm side up) and it'll 'crash' into the pencil. I don't think the physics of it would work.

Just infront of the centre of the wheels
If its possible to tilt the engine forward a bit that would be ideal for clearance. Just not sure on the whole oil at front of sump etc. unless you run a dry sump with a cooler in the wing

Ps john, get some sort of expert involved that you can discuss these things with rather than asking a bunch of IT analysts and the like how to mid mount an engine!

The suspension wouldn't work properly if it was no longer trailing. You'd want to build yourself a new subframe to fit the XE to - maybe base it on a Mini engine conversion kit?
