C20xe mark there mint!!!
Don't put a 2.0 8v in you will only wish you'd stuck a redtop in haha I love mine!
Don't listen to people whos had crap redtops and had bad expreances it's like anything else out there you get good ones or bad ones!
Try and get a minter and standard and clean it up I.e like dan is doing
I say its all down to who fits it really and make sure it's all done correct

My 2.0 8v converted corsa wasn't too bad, it was easy to do aswell! buy you might be disappointed with the power though! If I had the choice and time back then I'd probably have gone c20xe!

Mines an old c20xe, it's out of a B Reg astra GTE
Whats that 27 year old engine in a 1999 Corsa haha, ad wouldn't be worried if she did she's an old gal now But NO she doesn't tap or smoke
You'll have to come and see her one night pop down?
Have to get a good one that's standard orrrr you see running so it's not a bag of hammers.

It's common for xe's to tap from cold. Like Kev says though try find the best engine you can and take time with the conversion. Considered xe1 if you were thinking of the 130 8v the z18xe1 would be better option.

I've had mine now mines from a 88 GTE no knocks or smoke all so on the earlyer 1s they have a coscast head witch is better than the later 1s that can suffer from porous as oil and water galleries are to close together. Ad said might aswell go for a 20xe a lot of power difference from them extra 8valves and the engine looks a lot better

Hide 'COSCAST' (Early) and GM (Later) head differences
The C20XE engine's heads came in two notable forms. The original versions which appeared in the Astra GTE, Calibra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra between 1988 and 1991 were cast by Cosworth. These are usually more sought after, due to their superior casting qualities, over the GM version which was introduced some time in 1991 (appearing with the
Astra GSi). [3] One of the alleged qualities of the 'COSCAST' head is its inherent resistance to porosity; this was achieved by eliminating the presence of tiny air bubbles during the casting process. The Coscast head can be identified by a 'Coscast' logo which is stamped under the 3rd exhaust port.
The GM head was manufactured by Kolben-Schmidt [4] and featured different oil/water galleries, which required a pair of welsch plugs to be pressed in at either end. The presence of welsch plugs proved to be the sole means of identification for a GM manufactured head. A reinforced version of the GM head became available in the later years of the C20XE; however, these reinforcements meant that it had smaller
inlet/exhaust canals than the other two. [5]
Since an engine's oil pressure is much higherthan its coolant pressure, oil in a porus head has a tendency to gradually seep into the cooling galleries. A typicalsymptom of a porous head is usually a 'mayonnaise'-like substance in the coolant (residing on the cap). However, symptoms of a porous head have a tendency to vary, depending on the degree of porosity. Many C20XE operators have described the symptom as a curry-like residue or in more severe cases, a thick brown sludge. During the porous head debacle, GM faced bankruptcy - therefore dealers failed to recall affected models. However, as a result, many businesses now specialise in the repair of porous GM C20XE/LET heads - by either sleeving the affected gallery or by injecting a polymer based substance into the porous region. Typically, the amount of cylinder heads that were reportedly porous
remained relatively

The Coscast head can still go porous, its just not as common as the GM heads.
And ive also heard of and seen coscast heads fitted from factory to late spec (coilpack) Mk3 Astra Gsi's.
And not all XE's between 89 and 91 had them either. Infact it wasn't really a large number of them that were produced.

Thanks for the info lads its looking more like a c20xe if i do go ahead with the change.
Shaun im not sure what to do yet as im frightened encase i spend all that money on lifters/valve stem oil seals/piston rings done that it could still end up smokeing and tapping.
