Car takes dot 3, can I use dot 4 if the dot 3 is drained first or will it react or some other undesirable effect?

Will be fine. What car is it out of interest? Modern cars use DOT4

DOT3 and DOT4 are compatible - its DOT5.1 that isn't as it's silicone based.

Sorted, can get a hold of DOT4 for free but not DOT3.
