I currently have a 56 plate grande punto 1.9 diesel with 55K miles on the clock. We have recenlty had a baby boy and I can do with a bigger car.

A boy at work is selling a mint condition 2001 530d with 113k Miles. FSH etc.. For £2,5K

Do I get rid of my car for £3.5K, buy the above and stick a grand in the bank???

It seems a good idea on one hand but on the other I am getting rid of a car to replace it with one which is twice as old with twice as many miles.

P.S. BMW 530's make me prodeuce sex wee

No, grand in the bank will be used up first time something breaks.

Parts for older bmws aren't that bad really. I looked into stuff before I bought a 330d. Good engines if it's the 208 or whatever they are.

Do it. Parts are no more expensive than a Mondeo of same age.

Also I am breaking a 525i SE if you need any bits

PS. I have one. Done over 7k miles so far since end of September.

Just sailed through MOT with an advisory on tires.

Is it auto or manual?

Would be best to check the kind of MPG the Bmw will do, tax band and also insurance, can see that being quite a bit different to a newer smaller engined punto.

on my 3 series i averaged 44mpg this week to work and back and round town. so a touch less for a heavier car. should still see 40mpg imho

Somebody else at work has just said the heads crack at 70k miles and I should avoid like the plague. Is this true?

He is talking shit, that car has 113k miles and hasn't cracked the head obviously...tbh even new cars can have headgasket/cracked head problems...its very rare and luck of the draw really.

Given the hype about BMW prices, I have to say its been cheaper to run in alot of departments than my Mazda so far. Just the servicing that's ridiculous, but they do alot of stuff compared to your average car. But you won't be worried about service history on that car really for that money

Do it.

Just looked at MPG, no where near enough for me, so out of the picture now. Shame, would have loved a big barge with high MPG
