Its very easy, some good tutorials on XDA Developers. I would link, but its blocked at work.
Theres a thread in the Sensation Development Sub Forum, called something like 'Noob Friendly, How to S-OFF, Clockwork mod etc'. You'll need to install the latest firmware (Another noob friendly guide on there).
I'd recommend installing either Android Revolution HD, or Virtuous Inquisition. Both are ICS ROMs but far better than the stock HTC effort.

You'll get your head around it, its pretty simple.
Should have seen it before the noob friendly guides...

TAWK TA ME.
Basically, yes it will, massively.
The only way you can fuck your phone up is by using unstable software, or not following the tutorials properly. Its very simple.
Do what I said in this thread, read EVERYTHING, twice. If you make a backup, which you should, you can always restore back to default.
My phone broke due to out-of-date software btw. There was an issue with the SD Card Partition side of the Clockwork Recovery that I ahdnt seen. I use EXT4 Touch recovery now and its perfect.
FYI, just by getting S-OFF and flashing a ROM (30 mins max) your phone can become a Sensation XE with Beats Audio, or a fully custom ROM with all bloatware etc removed, and lots of nice UI and Mods.

Managed to get on to XDA, thought it was blocked.

That thread has just popped up. Very helpful and probably the best ROM. (ICS)

Nope, better EQ I guess, you can get better results with PowerAmp but thats about Ł3. Thats the only difference between the Sensation and the XE...
For one, I love geeky shit like this so the new skins/UI etc are all much better than stock. The will list whats better in each ROM.
It ranges from visual changes, to complete overhaul including Overclocked Kernels, Optimized coding and stripping out all the shit.
This is about Virtuous Inquisition, which is what I use. Flashing Android Revolution HD tonight though.

The best thing about rooting, for me, is the ability to swap and change ROMs in minutes, its like a new phone. Install ROM manager and you can have 4 ROMs at once. Just switch between them whenever you want.
Also, being able to instal mods in seconds. Full graphics in GTAIII, Camera mods, free apps etc etc... You get the idea.

Are you running a Sensation?
admittedly I do like the look of that link, and an over clock sounds good, I just don't want to break my phone..
find me the guides you've used and I'll give it a go

Yep, bought on release day.
I used old tutorials from when the Sensation was first rooted. The new ones are much easier.
Even if, somehow the phone breaks, HTC will repair it. Mine was bricked, and HTC still repaired it and sent it back within 2 days. They will plug it in, try another battery, replace motherboard. Done.
I'll find the ones you need now.

PS, I hold no responsibility for bricked phones Again, mine was due to everything being new/unstable at the time.

My XE seems to have decided to turn itself off a few times a day at the moment so I may give this a go later too

I had that with my Sensation. I used Recovery to restore a backup and used Titanium Backup to restore all Apps etc. Good as new

Just flashed Android Revolution HD 6.5.5 XE. Very nice ROM, bog standard ICS UI, but very fast and stable.
Comes bundled with optional mods such as overclocked Kernel and a few performance tweaks.
Not as flashy as Virtuous but decent if you like standard HTC Sense
