I sent an email a year ago, it only arrived today, where did it go in the meantime? How does this happen?

was it an email to yourself?
you can set a send time in the future on some clients such as outlook - they just sit in your outbox until the time you have specified

Has to have been sitting on their pop server or something, gmail will give up trying after about 24 hours.
I'm going for user error though, it'll have been sitting there and they've not noticed it before.

He said it only arrived at the top of his inbox today, he contacted me as soon as it arrived, or so he said, he has no reason to lie I don't think.
