Just out of interest, who here owns an SSD (solid state drive)? I've had one in my PC since the beginning of the year, it's made my computer incredibly quick, boots up in 20 seconds flat and programs open instantly  I've got the OCZ Agility 3 120GB, and I've just ordered a Crucial M4 128GB for my laptop, and I want to get a small one for my HTPC too  Once you use a computer with an SSD, any other computer, no matter how quick, will seem incredibly slow!

Same, i got so happy when i got my SSD.
Im using a 120gb OCZ vertex 3.
The only annoyance is having to install everything to the storage drive, shame you cant default it.
Are you on sata2 or 3?

I'm sure it is, fully loaded to the desktop with programs open? I'm sure 'new' computers will be even quicker, I'm using 5 year old hardware so I'm sure that's holding it back somewhat.

Sata2 at the minute as I'm still using an old Q6600 machine.
And it is a little annoying, but anything that's not a big game goes on the SSD anyway, it's still only half full I've got a 1TB drivefor storage so it's ideal.
I bought a caddy for my laptop as it has space for two drives so I can still use the 500GB drive it came with as storage, so perfect really

Love the instant startup from standby on my MacBook Air Sometimes it takes a little longer if it's having a moment, but it's a hell of a lot quicker than a mechanical.

Got a 60gb Vertex 2 in my 5 year old Sony Vaio and it goes well. Just got a new laptop so have bought a 120gb Vertex 3 and 8gb of ram for it so should fly nicely

My next laptop is getting one, seen an acer that has an empty second hdd slot so just putting a small one for the os and programmes.
Can you put your os onto the mechanical hard drive as well in case of ssd failure though?

You can yes, it would mean installing the OS twice, and you'd get a choice of which to boot from when you turn it on. But it's pointless really, if the ssd dies then all your data will still be on the mechanical drive anyway.

An ssd is no more likely to fail then a mech drive though really! Keep a Ubuntu live cd in you laptop bag for emergencies

200 GB OCZ in my work MBP, 300 GB Intel in my private MBP.
Intel seems faster, but then the general spec of my own MBP is better.

Take a look at FusionIO if you want some real speed machines. Got to play with one at work. Blisteringly quirky but drivers were unstable rebooting it typically was not a simple job.

ive had SSDs for about 4 years now.
Started off with early samsung MLC's when they came out (slow in comparison by todays standards, but still quicker than conventional).
upgraded my whole PC a month back and and now have 2x 128 Crucial M4s in raid0, extremly fast!

indeed... but for me the performance massively outweighs the possibility of it going wrong.
Given that ALL my important stuff is stored on my NAS (and backed up onto a 2TB USB 3 external drive and then to the HIDrive cloud), my PC is a mere terminal.
wouldnt be the end of the world if I had to reinstall / RMA a disk etc.
