I'm on Virgin's 30Mb service.
I've never had more problems with an ISP and I've been on several.
Had the router reset itself then not connect for 30 mins a few times, had to have a engineer out to replace most of the wiring despite it only being 3 months old and the wireless cutting out or refusing to work altogther.
Oh and slow speeds at times too but not so bad that its been unusable.

Unfortunately it is a bit like ADSL in that it's area dependant. So some UBR's (think ADSL/BT exchange) will be oversubscribed and/or local network will be in poor shape (although they are doing a lot of upgrades to UBR equipment). But most of the problems now are down to the 'Superhub' combined modem/router which unfortunately is the only modem you can have (i use an older Cisco modem) now, although there is a 'router-bypass' (allows you to use your own router) which helps.
Generally though, if you're in a decent area then you can expect a decent service.
I'm in the sticks a little and in the 10+ years of having cable, it's been rock solid (can count the issues on one hand) with the connection always (near enough) providing the quoted speed.
Bet is to get on the VM forums and Cableforum.co.uk forums (good place for advice/info/help etc), search for your postcode/area and see what crops up.

As Dom said, depends on area like all internet services.
I'm in the same boat as Dom, the only fault we had was when my dad replaced the power supply with one he had lying about, which caused pages to load extremely slow (BBC took about 1 minute), my dads fault, they came out next day and replaced it. That was way back with NTL though, no problems since.
edited as I forgot to finish my sentance

Can't fault the service I've had in Derby. 2 years solid 10mb never faulted, never had to call.

Got 50mb at home, used to have 2mb, only problems was slow Internet and low signal as I was far away. Now we're on 50mb and I'm wired and it's fucking awesome, it's so fast. Has its slower moments but it's still faster than most Internet I've used

You can get in touch with them via the VM / CableForum forums and see if they will "piggyback" the cable then for the last ~500 yards use the copper phone lines...
EDIT: Col, did you go through a cash back service? £62.36 available
