Save the money for when you do go for something proper, there really is very little you can do.

C16se camshaft, decent exhaust system and a set of carbs would be pretty cool. Don't how much much difference it will make on that engine though. Could be fun

Depending what you use the car for you might be able to swap boxes/diff to get better acceleration.

Why don't you upgrade the handling, and braking ready for next year? It will give less stuff you need to shell out on come coversion time. Also spend some money rebuilding the engines.
But if you really what to, fit a 1.3 SR ported head, with cams and twin 40's.

That's what I did, and makes it worth while in the long run
No point shelling out on the engine you have if you plan to change it the next year, just get the other engine ready and make yours as prepared for it as you can

Cav one is cheaper, and needs to be modded to fit. Whiteline bolts straight on.
Next would be polybush, and maybe braided brake lines, with nice fresh fluid.
If you take the rear seats and stuff out, the back end will sit higher, and your mates can't come.

These 1.2 8v threads always go the same way.
Some kind person writes out all the technical stuff after everyone has told the OP not to bother, the OP. says he will do it, and never ends up happening, due to cost.
Then a 2.0 gets chucked in and. Nothing gets declared again due to cost.
That's how it generally goes
