By the time you remove it and see metalic particles the damage is already done.

By the way , pistonheads/boring stuff/show cars/ nice e36 m3 for you.

I've got one on mine but not done an oil change yet since fitting it to see if its collected anything.

Didnt realise they could be bad for engines though

I can't see how they could be bad, yes the particles may have already done damage but if they didn't attach themselves to the plug, they'd continue to flow with the oil and do further damage.

Im happy with my M3 thanks

They can be bad aparently by either failing at high temp, causing the plug t ocome apart and floatr around your engine.

Or more likely, the lump of particales reaches critical mass and seperates from the plug agasin, floating off around the crank etc to do some not so nice damage!

I'd think for it to reach critical mass, it'd either have to be left too long between oil changes or there's an underlying issue causing the engine to shred itself. As for the coming apart issue, yeah it would be a bit of a bugger if that happened

Whilst I agree with that ed, that said everything is built to a cost. My engine is on 94k and sounds lovely, I would like it to stay that way of possible. The idea seems to make logical sense, I'm just worried its playing with fire.

I have one on my enduro bike. But tbh that has a oil and filter every 10 hours. So easy to tell if it's about to impload.

There is always minute bits on the plug but better to be in there than the oil.

I would get a decent one, on a M3 I would be doing oil and filter every 4k ish. For the cost will keep the engine nice and fresh.

Why would the risk of a magnetic sump plug self destructing be greater than the risk of a normal one self destructing?

Because they are made by people who arent normal parts suppliers i.e non OEM/Factors etc. No garuntee of quality

If its made it to 94k and sounds good without one, then it not having one cant be bad for it

Even the HKS ones?

You could apply your statement to a majority of after market suppliers though

The concern with it coming apart is surely to do with the magnet seperating from the plug itself.

I've got to agree with ed here, this is exactly what your oil filter is for so you're not doing your engine any harm by not having one but I've always like the idea of them. I would imagine that they could even extend the life of the filter to an extent by simply reducing its workload.

As for this ctitical mass claim - a magnet cannot pick up more than the weight it can lift, so how would stuff that is on it, that it has 'picked up' in the first place suddenly de-magnatise? Unless it got washed off by a surge of oil it's simply physically impossible internet invented bullshit. No offence

Simple Alan, operating temperature or oil pressure vs magnet strength either possible outcomes.

Think I will just stick with a regular one for now

So if it got washed off by oil?

Edit to say, I'm not trying to put you off the idea, even if it did drop some particles there would be even more floating around in the sump if you didn't have one at all. if you buy one from a reputable place I reckon 99.9% of the time they'll be hassle free

Yeah I know mate, was just interested in the discussion. Seems an ok idea, but seems less risky to jus keep a standard one.

May invest next oil change
