Seriously starting to lose the rag with this car now. Had it booked in for an MOT on Wednesday, broke down on the way there. I've just spent about 1k on insurance and its been sitting in a yard for about a month now.

When the engine gets hot its very very hesitant, popping and banging back firing etc, also black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Initial thought were the coil was overheating then throwing out a weak spark thus not burning the fuel, got a new coil and still got the same problem.

When cold the engine runs flawlessly, not a thing wrong with it.

Changed the ignition coil, changed the coolant temperature sensor.

Flashed the ECU and I'm getting these,

14 Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) Low voltage
66 Carbon Monoxide (CO) potentiometer High voltage

Anyone got any ideas before I throw the towel in?

Change the CTS for starters, maybe try earthing pin 20 to by pass the o2 sensor see if it runs any better?

Changed CTS for a genuing GM one. Will try earthing pin 20 and see what happens, I thougt that only worked if you didn't have a lamda sensor though?

Check the wiring to the sensor aswell or get a diagnostic machine and plug it in and go to the live data feeds and check the coolant temp and makesure it has a steady rise and doesn't drop off at any point

I was told it bypasses the sensor, although you're probably using the pin for the sensor at the moment thinking about it. probably need an early loom for that to work

Hope you sort it mate, don't jack it in as it is running so can only be sensors/electrical bits really at fault

Yeah, I appreciate the help but theres no point point in me pricking about with it really as tbh I don't really know know what I'm at with sensors electrics etc, I just know how to change them , It would probably end up sitting for another month at least untill I got it running properly.

It just twigged on me though, it actually runs ok when its hot untill I turn it off or else stall it. Its only when I try to start it again its vey hard to start, turns over for 10seconds or more before it fires up and starts backfiring etc.

I don't have a clue though, best bet is to give it to someone who knows

Deffo check the wiring to the CTS, it may be broken somewhere along the lines.

Have you tried to run it with the MAF un-plugged??

similar sort of thing happened on my LET Jamie, quite rough idle when re-started once hot. stalled and backfired. noticed the pipe connecting the ICV had a small split in it where it had perished changed that and its been fine since.
