never had this before, but basically its making no sound. nothing when unlocking or locking the phone, no ringer, no text alerts.

when i press buttons on side of the phone that usually bring up the ringer icon in the centre of the phone with a bar under it, the bar isn't there at all. can't adjust it. if i go to sound settings, i can see the ringer, can slide it to the top, it makes the ring tone etc, then go back to lock phone and no sound. there is nothing plugged into it, started doing this a couple of hours ago.

OK, just I heard of someone having the same problem when theirs had a passcode.

I assume if you try to watch a YouTube video for example you can't move the slider to hear any sound?

There's a little switch in the bottom of the headphone jack, if you spill snakebite down the inside of your phone then it gets stuck down and stops the earpiece working properly. Plug and unplug some headphones into the jack rapidly to try and budge it, some IPA electronics cleaning stuff can also fix it.

How old is it? Take it to Apple and get it sorted - if it's out of warranty then it'll be £120 max.

My iPad did this. I had to assign the slide switch to be used to lock the screen, turn off iPad, back on then change switch to make it silence it and it's worked since.
