The garage we normally use has closed down and used to pay £25 with free re-test.

Been calling around this morning and it's ranging from £40-60

Wow, shows how long its been since I've had to 'look around' for an MOT, I remember the days when everywhere used to be 20 quid.

£25, smaller garages that aren't VAT registered should be cheaper

my local village garage charges £40 to anyone in the village (i dont know what his other "non-village" cost is) and the local Nissan dealer will price match any quote i give him.

i use the Nissan garage as they will drop me off/pick me up from work as i need so suits me!

Although, at kwik fit you have to pay £15 for a retest. So it will cost you £50 if you fail.
