Putting 'Astra GTE Champion C20XE Engine' in google its says on the wikipedia website that they are the same engine.
The limited-edition "Champion" Astras from 1990 were fitted with the same C20XE "redtop" engines (so called because of their red spark plug cover), along with Connolly Leather interiors.[8]

Just the same as any other redtop.
Out of the three engines I had the later coilpack one from a 93 Calibra ran the best.

Rebuilding them isn't that hard Mark, I didn't know much about it before I did mine but now I'd feel happy doing it

Buy 1 you can hear/see running.
I wouldn't say rebuilding 1 was a necessity though. No point fixing something that isn't broken. Find a good runner and it will more than likely be fine.
"rebuilt" also gets thrown about alot, quite loosely in most cases. Some people think that changing a few gaskets qualifies as a rebuild so beware when buying.

i gave up rebuilding one as the parts are just so expensive, you can have much more fun for a lot less money. XE's are over rated anyway....
you could get a pants XE and put it in a corsa and it'll not have much more on the 16xe... obv dependant on how much of a "genuine 80k" engine it is
they've all had the puddens smashed in

If they get a hard life but also get looked after don't see the problem. Too many "knackerd old xe's" stories floating about from uneducated people waffling Internet talk.

Tbh i would rather take the chance with a used C20XE over a used X16XE. The 1.6 16v seems to be a bit soft bottom end wise. All you hear of on here is about smokey X16's.
In what way are they over-rated Jed?? They are still widely used in alot of Motorsport these days. Can't be that bad surely. Or are you a bit bitter because you never finished your XE build.lol.

Think im just going to hang on for one i can hear running for a little more peace of mind.
Would love a LET but will more likely to get even more problems with them.
