Dont really play it that often to be fair, but ive played fifa for an hour or so this afternoon and when i went to start about my 5th match its just came up with the error message saying it couldnt read that disc and it may need cleaning? Doesnt seem to be any scratches at all, ive cleaned it and it still doesnt work. Always comes up with this message just as im about to start an actual match. A mate of mine is going to bring his copy round tomorrow but from what ive read that will probably come up with the same error? Is there anything I can do? ive tried MW3 which works fine.

Could be the laser in the DVD drive.
A pot tweak or replacement may be needed.

I'd try your mates disc first and see what happens. I've got a MW3 that looks perfectly fine, but half the time the xbox doesn't recognise it, but it's fine with all other games.

MW3 is notorious for the 'dirty disc error'. Its even been reported to happen when ppls have bought it as a Game On Demand ie. there is no disc so there shouldn't be a problem.

Also, any game you play regularly, you should install to your harddrive, as this reduces wear and tear on the DVD drive.

I gotta new laser off eGay for £6 and was a piece of piss to fit.

I sent the drive off to this guy, he fitted a new laser and gave a 3 month warranty I think, and sent it back to me.

Think it cost about £27 including the P&P both ways.

As mentioned above, I forgot you could install them, that'll probably get round it and give you some more life in it for a while. If it's an older white xbox I really wouldn't waste money on repairs since it'll be one thing, then another, then another, easier just to get a new slim one, they're cheap as.

I used to get the unreadable error on MW3 so assumed the laser was on its way out and installed it.

However my son plays the Lego games fairly regular and they are fine so it must've been a disk issue. Trying another copy will pretty much tell you what's at fault.

Needs a good clean inside. This happend to mine few months ago, took ages to get it reading discs again. I came so close to sending it off for repair, but just cleaned the laser and it's worked ever since.

Tried my mates disk, it worked fine. Went to have a look at my disk to clean in again and noticed a massive ring on it (not sure how i didnt notice it before, assuming it was there) so im guessing my xbox has knackered the disc.

Yeah, some have a habit of doing that, one of my mates has done a few disks on his but, touch wood, mine never has.

Somewhere like Blockbusters might be able to skim it off for you, worth a try before you buy a new copy.

Laser burn...

I can't remember who but some bloke said to me you shouldn't leave the disc inside the Xbox when you turn it off/back on again etc. as it causes this.

Didn't think this mattered much though as people leave CDs in their car stereos for example?

If it's a perfect circle scratch it probably means you have moved the xbox while the disc is spinning, this happened to me when I first got an Xbox and I tried to stand it up while I was playing Forza 2 (no idea why I tried to mind you )
