We are after getting our kitchen tiled. Basically a splashback around wall above work surface. About 5sqm of tiles.
Got a quote of £300 not including tiles today. Is this really expensive?

Seems a bit pricey for labour only. Kitchens are usually pretty straightforward, a few sockets to go round but that's hardly difficult and maybe a bit around the windows depending on layout obviously.
Give it a go yourself, it's not hard. I taught myself and I've done quite a few now, from basic kitchen jobs to full bathrooms.

No chance I'm having a go myself. Our kitchen is quite tight and loads of sockets, switches to go round. I'd fuck it up.

You don't have to be neat, loosen the socket fronts off and tile upto the box behind, then the socket front sits on top of the tiles. No need to disconnect the sockets but you may need longer screws.
Honestly, tiling small areas like a kitchen is a doddle.

Easy Ben, I had never tiled before and did my kitchen a few years ago, very easy, as said loosen the sockets off and tile behind and redrew them down.

Deffo not doing it myself guys! Apart from doubting my ability to do a good job, With 2 kids etc I haven't got the time to spend at it. Would rather get someone in and not worry about it.
Going to get another couple of quotes. Thought £300 was high!

1 day to finish? If so, my dad would charge 100 quid for that. He's cheap though, i'd expect to pay aeound 180-200

He reckons a day's job. Tiles are those rectangular brick style jobbies, so not ultra small etc.

I'd say 150+vat is the going rate based on what our contractors would charge and thats near London too.
I paid someone to fully tile an ensuite with porcelain tiles and the labour was £150 for approx 18 sq/m. Granted that was at mates rates. Now that was only 6 hours work so not sure how he is getting a days rate from doing 5 sq/m.

Depends on the tiles, what the substrate is and condition of it and also if he is taking any plaster or anything off and putting up tile backer board to make it more waterproof.
If it's just in ceramic tiles and he is putting them straight on new plaster board then it's expensive. Shouldn't cost no more than £70 for adhesive and grout, probably a lot less depending what he is using and how thick he puts the adhesive on.
On the other hand, it's something I would like to do. So pay it as it means I could charge more if I get into it.

For a guide from what I've seen, if it's a straight forward job then people charge between £20-35 per sq m for ceramics.

Knocked him down to £300 including tiles. So labour is at £200.
I'm happy with that as i've seen his work and its top notch.
