So, bought a new car and tried to update it on my Admiral insurance policy but they wanted an additional £500 (as it was out of renewal stage, couldn't match what was quoted on confused). So I started a new policy with 'Bell from Admiral' (funny how they seem to have the monopoly on this bit of the market) whcih requires me to have a 'clever little box' fitted to my car. Basically wondering if anyone has any experience of this, all I know is they cancel your policy automatically if you drive over 100mph, not a clue about what they do with any speeding information etc, slightly worried now I've had time to think about it. I may just spend an extra £10 a month and get it with Elephant (also from Admiral)?

For the sake of a tenner a month I'd personally not have one.

I think I'm gonna cancel it, it's going to make me worry every time I drive the thing.

I'd only worry about how they use the data they have one you. In some ways that would work in your favour i.e. in event of a crash you are doing 25 in a 30 and someone hits you they can't accuse you of driving dangerously.
The small print tends to have a lot of restrictions and I would want to know how the data is being used i.e. is it being monitored 24/7, do they store it for x months, do they give it to the police etc.

Probably in the T's and C's that it'd void the insurance, as per any normal insurance and you'd probably have to tell them you are attending in writing so they don't cancel it. Too much hassle

I quite simply wouldn't want them collecting data about how I drive, that's my problem, not theirs

I think instead of the "black box" devices, an insurance company should release a small camera that is constantly on and recording the last 5 minutes. In event of a crash they just watch the footage back.

Out of interest, what kind of car have you bought that they are asking you to use that box thing?? Im guessing its something fast-ish where they see it as some sort of threat.

Alfa 159 Ti. I have just cancelled it and bought from Elephant instead.
It's labelled as a 'good driver' product, but I have my suspicions that regardless of how I drive they'd find some way to use it against me, so i'm glad to be out of it!

no way i'll have one either, even if it costs twice as much. it's only matter of time once they have a good percentage of people with them in, then they will be made compulsory.... and then we're being charged for insurance and road tax by the mile, getting automatic speeding tickets, and big brother knows exactly where you're going 24/7. not a nice thought!

I wouldn't want one. 99% of the time you would probably be fine. That 1% when you done something that you maybe shouldn't have but it was just a momentary lapse, you can bet they'll wriggle out of it.
