Depends on the car and its original value. Most of the ones I've sold have been about 20% less than book price.

Similar one up for 8.5k this is up for 7.8k way to expensive.
Would 6k be a decent guess?

D isn't even on the log book, mostly vandal damage, minor repairs etc.
As a rule, a damage recorded car is worth about 1/3 less than the book value.

Doesnt go on damage alone, goes on damage, age of vehicle, mileage, pre accident condition etc. I've seen some pretty fucked cat d's and seen some cat c's that weren't as bad, but we're listed as cat c due to been older.

You Dont have to tell people it's a cat d by law though. Only if asked you have to tell them.
Well it was when I looked into it several years ago

I'd probably say 15-20% . If the cars done properly and you intend on running it I wouldn't worry. I've repaired lots of damaged motors that should be cat C that haven't been on register and no one has noticed as I make sure that they are done to highest standard.
Check that panels are genuine too and lights etc if you can . Spurious are never as good
My advice is take it for an Mot even if not needed pay the £45 and ask tester to take note of any signs of bodging . If seller says no don't buy it . Salvage cars are a minefield, I do them regularly and I have seen alot of corners cut when people are selling them as they think if it looks ok it is ok and don't justify spending money 'where it can't be seen .

It will show on a HPI check though, and if you haven't warned people about it, and they find out, it will prob put them off as you haven't been honest about it.
My old Lexus was a cat D. They previous owner had lots of photos of him driving into the back of a van. The car was perfectly fine apart from head lights and bumper. The car drove fine when I had it, and I sold it on with no issues either.

Total nonsense
More cars are Cat D now due to the labour rates to repair them.
Doesn't take much at £120 per hour to soon rack up 50% of the value.

£120 an hour maybe for mechanical but you won't get a body shop getting over £30 a hour insurance rate.

Not all. Totally depends on the insurance company. Some say pattern parts. Some genuine only.
Non of it is straight forward. Some do a fixed cost repair, some not.
But it doesn't factor in just the cost of the car and the cost of the repair.

Sometimes they don't make sense though as they will pay out for a 10 repair on something that costs less to buy.
But yeah filler is used a lot.
