It can't cease to exist as a landmark. The only question is who operates it.
Probably bad news for the existing company but as I remember they've had some fairly bad mismanagement so it was probably always inevitable.
I would think it'll change hands and the formula won't change much. There are probably people now considering what the business case is and I'm sure there are lots of people with a few mil in the bank and an eye for cashing in on a very famous tradition.

The only problem would be if it falls in to disrepair and becomes prohibitive to re-open although that would be years.

A lot of mis information from the press there this is what Martin @ Burgstube says
From Martin via FB:
"This is entirely untrue, the translation from the German is incorrect. The Nurburgring circuits are owned by the government and are currently leased to a private company for them to operate. The private company are in the process of removing themselves from the contract.
There is some uncertainty as to who will operate the tracks in the future, it may be that the government will operate it directly again, as happened in the past.
There is no serious threat, just a lot of politics. The media really need to stop reporting what they think is happening and just see the track opening as usual. If there is any damage being done at the moment it seems it's mostly the media causing it."
And I trust Martin's opinion.
