I believe I can drive a car with no tax or MOT to a pre booked MOT so long as the car is insured? If it fails can I drive it home with out getting hassled by the police?

And do I need to inform the DVLA that I'll be driving a car with no tax or MOT?

You can drive it to and from the mot station and for repairs aslong as it has been pre-booked.
