hello , this is abit of a random thread but im trying to work out what sort of life expectancy i can expect from my 1.0 corsa , before i brought it everyone i knew slated them saying they are not very good engines.
it is currently on 105,000 miles (50,000) of them i have done myself , ive had no real promblems with it except i replaced the clutch . It is looked after with regular service and no hard abuse , also ive changed the coolant to try stop the head gasket rotting. The cam chain doesnt rattle either.
what engines do people on hear have with how many miles and any promblems?

Corsa, c20let about 3k since rebuild last year, it's had various problems. It still has a gearbox problem but it's liveable. Car has about 130k

If you've done 50,000 miles in it then you should know if it's a reliable engine or not, but it sounds like it. Although the chain should be replaced at 100,000 if it hasn't been already

I have a 1 litre corsa B, on 93k miles, when I bought the car it had a problem with cutting out & wheel bearing. I replaced the crankshaft sensor, wheel bearing, gave it an oil change, sparkplugs changed, oil filter change, new tyres all round. The cutting out is no longer an issue.
Issues I do have are:
Needs alloy wheels, has rust/rot underneath that needs attention and slight rust on some panels. Also it's been neglected with regards to polishing and has suffered some marks on the paint, I gave it a polish by hand the other day with super resin and it removed a few spots. Will have to repeat this to get it looking good.
Need to decide if it's worth cutting all the rust out and welding new plates of steel in.
Btw don't worry about 1 litres, on corsasport.co.uk, you see 1 litre engines going for £50 all the time. So if it fails, who cares, plonk another block in.
Btw congratulations that your chain doesn't rattle, mine sounds like a skeleton in shitloads of bondage shackles.
You should consider replacing the head gasket for peace of mind. Also the timing chain normally needs doing at either 100k or 120k on these models. Keep servicing it and there's no reason it won't go on for a long time

My old Corsa 12v has been scrapped now.
I think it was scrapped late last year, would've been 14 years old now and the engine still would've been low mileage for its age.
I sold it just over 2 years ago with only 63k on it.

My 12v Corsa (now a C20XE) is on 41k (I think, well the shell is anyway), original engine has done around 39k and now lives on in a motorbike, runs fine.
Only problems were the MAF and throttle position sensors when the engine was at around 20k/2 years old.

2004 Seat Leon Cupra R 1.8T 225
Bought it in 2005 with 12k and now has 79k
Problems:
- Ignition coils replaced
- Speed sensor
- 2 x EGT sensors
- 1 x Seized Brembo caliper
- Window regulator
Not too bad, but Brembo was costly. EGTs aren't that cheap either.

Corsa 1.2 16v got it at 61k miles sold at 79k only ever replaced temperature sensor.
Fiesta zetec 1.25 got it at 97k sold it at 98k miles was a piece of shit and had nothing but problems!
Nova c20xe had it a few months, done a 150mile trip when I picked it up.. It's plumbed together by a pikey, had to sort the wires out on cts, replace icv, replace cams, sort out a massive air leak... Needs a camber done and it pisses out water from the water pump, cuts out all the time and Loads of other problems to. Going to have to take it out and start again...
Edit: I do love the nova though, it's great fun

1997 Astra Mk3.. 1.6 8v. I got it at 127k, now on over 161k miles.
I converted it from SPi to MPi, so all the head gasket, cambelt etc were done then.
The only non-service items I have replaced are rear brake flexi hoses, track rod ends, front drop links and a brake pipe.
Other than brakes, tyres, servicing and mods it's been an utterly fantastic car and just keeps going and going.

i have a 2000 1.2 16v corsa b club, which is fine now, but garage had to carry out before and during the purchase/warranty period:
head gasket replacement
head skim
new clutch
water pump
thermostat twice due to faulty part
gear linkage
handbrake cables
radiator
since then i have had the oil pressure switch and the idle control valve and 2 part worn tyres, but seeing as i only had to pay for the oil and idle control valve sensors not too bad, and i still enjoy the car!? it has now done 68k from new

don't listen to the hearsay, a 1 litre is fairly reliable, and if it does fuck up, buy a new block for £50 from here and lift it in the bay by hand (possible), then refit all the ancillaries and who cares that you blew an engine that costs £50 to replace? win imo.

Corsa C20XE, Problem after problem after probelm.
Air leak, had to get all new hoses and gaskets.
Hot start problem, had get CTS rewired
Erattic idle - New engine loom
Alternator belt snapped
Massive flat spots while applying power - unknown as the engine shit itself the day after.
Water pump failed, outer metal edge fell off and wrecked timing belt and rollers, possibly pulleys.
Bad tapping noise from the engine - unsolved.
All in 500 miles I should add.
Nissan Qasqai - 2 news fault free driving. 30,000 miles and not a thing gone wrong, just basic servicing.

i have a corsa b 1.0 club, says 49,000 on clock but i think it should be 149,000, bought it in december and have had to replace a lot of parts in the brakes and suspension area etc, but the engine is solid and runs great and the body work is in pretty decent shape to whoever buys it off me will have a very very solid car!
