I really want to buy myself a watch, I currently have a couple of cheap 'Accesories' type ones
I'd be looking at £300-500 max though. No idea what is decent in that price range.

I've got a cheap Police one, it looks cool (ish) though
Christopher Ward are nice at that price range. Not too common either. I quite fancy a CW.

If you want something well made and automatic but dont want to break the bank then go Tissot, Hamilton or as Gav says TWSteel.

It all depends what style you like and whether you want the brand to send a statement.
Try doing a search for 'watch day' as a few threads seem to have used that prefix.
I have a Certina DS Podium that I think is a great mix between casual, contemporary, stylish and classic.
I also like a few of Tissot and Festina's watches, but find the former to be a bit plain and the latter to be a bit sporty. Certina sits in the middle.

Certina do really nice watches, although I'd never heard of them before Balling mentioned them in one of the last watch threads

Where's the guy with the portfolio of Rolex watches? Or has he sold up and retired?

I too have a nice 'Police' watch.
I find it looks nice, has a good weight to it and works.
people often comment on how nice it is.
It cost around £200 and was a present, I did not need a portfolio to buy it and it gets as much attention as a watch needs from people.

Fair enough if people want to spend 10k on a watch and show off, but mine tells the time like any other watch and I like the look of it.
Suppose it is like girlfriends, sure you may get a supermodel if you are a millionaire and flash your money, but at the end off the day I bet they still suck dick the same, rarely.
