After driving my 1.7 dti astra daily for a year now I need some fun again and that involves a project of some kind..

I'm looking at buying or building on a budget (2nd parts etc) a cheap fast road/weekend toy/track that I may have a go on track also at some stage..

I'm quite open minded really, but need it to be cheap overall, build and general costs (insurance and tax) otherwise I would get a cheap scooby of some sort..

I'm talking like £200/300 car, £200 coilovers, relatively straight forward engine swaps, gut it all out, used r888 etc

K11 micra pre or post facelift - sr20de conversion
Civic ek 1.5 vtec - b16/18 conversion
Corsa/nova 1.6 8v/xe
Fiesta mk5 1.25 - 1.8/2.0 zetec

Those are the choices so far (bearing in mind I havnt experienced or seen any of these go)

some of you have track experience or been in one of them so can give information etc

For what you'd spend on an engine conversion etc, save the hasstle, PH1 172 for £700-800
Gut it, r888's and buy all mods second hand off cliosport.net
Bargain, fast, capable track car

Corsa will only decimate all if you put about 15 grand into it, or more.

Then you need to worry about making it handle better.

Why an ek civic when it's far heavier (and usually more expensive) than say a 1.3 EG? Even sticking a d16 in it will see 130bhp in a light car when stripped.

You and your honda's far too dedicated to the marque.

I'd say go for a cheap ph1 172. Cheap track car out the box.

Go for a ph2 172 over a ph1 there's nothing in it price wise now

When you gut a ph2 you will have far more bits to sell, nicer leather interior, xenon lights should go for £100 a side etc. Could make most your money back before you start

Good luck getting a remotely decent enough car thats going to be fun on track for £200/£300.

Mk2 MR2 gets my vote though. Might not be as quick over-all as an RS Clio (well not with a beginner behind the wheel) but it will be alot more fun on the whole.

i would have said MX5

and here is one for £300

Auto Tader advert

its listed as 160k miles but is actually in KM so it closer to 100k miles

it is in budget and given a bit of wear and tear gives you chance for a "project" to tidy things up,

a new roof is £250-400 fitted but you could do it yourself, or simply replace/re-seat the rubbers

plenty of tuning parts for these and the chance fit a supercharger which again fit in your project wishes

NB: i have a 93 "K" reg MX5 with 168,000KM and doesnt drop a beat, the bushes are squeaking a bit showing their age but gives you something else to replace
