I know the answer is probably "no", BUT... on an ancient phone like the Orange SPV-xxx can you upgrade the Windows Phone OS on it?
edit - I think it's got Windows MOBILE on it so the older one...

Just answered my own question:
"The final version of Windows Mobile, released after the announcement of Windows Phone, was 6.5.5. Microsoft has stated that the Windows Phone operating system is incompatible with devices designed for Windows Mobile as "Windows Mobile 6.x devices do not meet Windows Phone hardware requirements designed to ensure a consistent user and developer experience",[4] and software designed for Windows Mobile is incompatible with the new operating system.[5]"

Its even better than that. Those people that bought a Windows phone a year ago Windows Phone 7/7.5 have been told there is no upgrade path to Windows Phone 8!

Microsoft aren't alone here. It has happened with iOS, Android, Blackberry OS, Symbian; in fact this is pretty common with majority of software regardless of platform.
I agree it's a rough ride for the WP7 users but there has been substantial changes to WP8 that clearly made it incompatible for WP7 hardware.

Symbian is one of the obvious. You also have phones like K700/800/T7** that didn't offer major version upgrades (most of the upgrades were just carrier branding) and it's the same with similar phones from other manufacturers.
Either way, it certainly isn't as uncommon as you're making it out to be.
