One of my friends has the 335i and everytime I go out in it I am liking it more and more. He has also fitted Eibach coilovers which have sorted the handling nicely.
I am going off the E46 M3 idea by the day for plenty of reasons, thus contemplating a 335 for the next Motor (should I decide not to lease something)
I have read plenty of 335i vs 335d threads on Pistonheads and just wondered if anyone on here has had any experience of either?
1) I love the noise the 335i makes, even as standard. I would imagine it to be quite special with a decat & exhaust. This is a big plus point for me over the Diesel.
2) Tuneability, Am I right in saying a remap on the 335D will see 340 bhp and 530lb/ft torque? BUT after that it gets very expensive? where as the 335i will see 400/400 for a lot less? Tuning route for both cars does not seem clear cut and opinion seems vastly divided on the interwebz. Reliability is important to me. Can anyone clarify the tuning options?
3) MPG, I currently get 22mpg in my 330 (90%) town driving. My friend in the 335i is seeing 26-28mpg (90%) town driving. I understand the 335i is reasonable on MPG on longer runs also. What realistic MPG would you see with the 335D? I need to think about losing noise/revs and gaining MPG, but how significant is the difference?
4) Reliability- I know about the fuel pump failures on the 335i, anything else to look out for on these cars? Do they chew through control arms, bushes etc like the E46
5) Will probably go for Coupe, certainly not a Saloon. As for a convertible, hmmm not too sure. What are the folding hardtops like?
6) Difference between M Sport and SE are cosmetic this time around? apparantly all coupe's have sports suspension?

Folding hardtops leave you with absolutely no boot space when down.
My neighbour has a 325i coupe convertible in grey. Beautiful car but plagued with electrical problems (ecu and various other bits cost him 3k to fix).
Thats about as much advice as I can give without pretending I know more.

If you are even taking MPG in to the equation, surely a 335i/d is not the right place to look?
Do you want a performance car or an economical car? You're never going to get both and an additional 4 MPG isn't something you'll ever feel.

I have only ever had one economical car in my life (well apart from Corsa's about 15 years ago), a PD110 Passat.
Everything else has done 15-25 mpg
On paper the 335i and 335D seem to offer very similar performance and again on paper the MPG on the 335D looks quite impressive.
I can afford the petrol running costs it's more a case of wether I want to if I can get pretty much the same performance (although different driving experience) out of the 333D

Also would like an Auto, they will be 2006/07 so pre LCI cars and thus have the steptronic and not the DCT.
Which gear box is stronger? If I put serious torque through it am I better with the manual or the auto?

depends on type of drivng and miles per year you do
if you do 12-15k+, buy the D
for pottering about, got the petrol
I have the e46 diesel convertible and an e88 118d convertible we got last month, but we do 30k a year between the 2, so diesel is cheaper to run and it comes down to cost per mile for the cars
the e46 is getting sold, replacing with n e93 diesel convertible, boot space not an issue for me though

335i if it where me. Dont care how good the diesel is, its always trying to match the petrol.
Unless of course, economy is the issue then it is a no brainer.

My mum also had a convertible which was plagued with problems, to the extent that BMW bought it back. New ECU, fuel rail and injectors (twice), roof mechanism (twice) amongst others. It had a higher mileage up and down on the inspection ramps than it did driving about

Seems like a common problem then.
My neighbours is only 3 years old and low mileage.

I would have the diesel as it makes a monster amount of torque.

Cheers did not know this, stands to reason that big torque would destroy the manual boxes then although I cant see me ever going over 400lb/ft if I buy and tune a 335i

you can get the petrols in manual mate only the dervs are all auto
alot of 135i owners are runnig close to 400 BHP with remaps etc
The 1M boys are over 400 BHP as it has additional cooling as standard on the 1M

You can lease a new M3 for around 500/mnth now, which isn't bad at all.
Then you won't need eibach suspension and tuning the engine.

Petrol. In fairness, when they bought it back, they replaced it with an M-Sport one and we never had any problems with it.

I long time ago, I was reading through one of my mates car mags. It was either Evo or Autocar.... It had a DMS remapped 335d Coupe that was just testing it's 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile and so on. Any ways, there was a very modified Audi Quattro (propper one) that had 400 or 500 bhp. When they both went up this runway, the Audi driver was shocked that this standard(ish) car was staying with him till about 140 mph! Since then, always liked them.

DMS re-mapped 335d vs A5 3.0TDI with Re-map and Miltek exhuast .
335d 13.2@105mph - Audi A5 13.9@98mph

I know I'm close to 400 a month for my puddle jumper 3 series!!
Someone on M3 forum was talking about it, deal is:
£524.97 29pcm
£1574.91 deposit
£1325.00 - pay in advance for EDC option
(So £2900 front payment).
The car :
M3 DCT
Heated seats
Leather
Metallic paint
Media Pack
19" Alloys
RFL included for the whole period (saving 450 sheet a year!)
I worked out it costs less than the depreciation you'd be hit with buying one outright!!
