Most people tend to go down the powerbox route, then look into some decent cams and management. A decent 4-2-1 manifold will help free up some power too

If your going to the effort in putting a 1.4 in why dont you just put a 1.6 in?

no fun in just dropping a 1.6, mite aswell drop a 2.0 in.
for power u have to first realise your not going to get monster power out of a 1.4 but gains can always be made.
head work is very important, increasing volumetric effiency is key. cleaning up the head and ports and polishing them slightly will help, will make it more responsive. cams, rasing the commprssion ratio, big bore it, lighten up the crank flywheel is always a good start
