Hi guys,
My mrs has been hinting she would like a kindle, now i've just looked and the basic ones dont look too bad, but the new fire hd that is released on her birthday looks more like a tablet, will this still be suitable for reading?
I think she will mainly use it for books, but no doubt if the option is there will use it instead of her laptop for browsing the net & playing games.
Only thing i have seen is that the kindle fire hd is very focused on selling stuff, ie its main screen has more links to amazon & shopping related stuff, then you have to get past this to get to user content etc.
Budget is £200 as i'm getting some other bits for her, so what would be best?
Cheers.

Fire doesn't have the e-ink screen, which if it's going to be used primarily for reading you'd be better off having.

Regular tablets with glossy full colour screens are not good for reading. I've read a couple of books on the iPad, and reflections really are incredibly annoying. Reading outside is a complete no go.

Is it not the same with iphone etc where you just whack the brightness up?
I dont have any experience of using tablets or e readers, i just cant see the appeal of an e reader over a tablet as its a one trick pony?

I'm not making this up. The reading experience on an e-reader is VASTLY better than on a tablet.
Get the right tool for the job. If she wants an e-reader get her an e-reader. Simples.

Reader is one trick pony imo

After reading a bit, and knowing the missus, i think the nexus 7 would be a good buy for her.
She hinted at a kindle, but she doesnt have anything to do with technology, so i think i will be doing the right thing, knowing what she will use it for.
Going to get it from tesco, as add the 16gb one to the basket, then add something else electrical to take it over £200, can use a code (TDX-KNHP) to knock £20 off and get free delivery to store, which is round the corner.
I know its not the same, but can get the kindle app for the nexus, and reviews ive read, the reading is ok on there.
Tbh, i would expect she will use it a few times for reading & use it mostly for browsing the net in bed or playing games on it.
Its just a shame that its restricted to 16gb & no card option.

Mate, you can add hard drives to the nexus using a PTG cable... I bought one for 99p! You can also connect PS3 controllers to it therefore you can add extra memory to it to watch movies etc

Why not just get a Kindle and a Playbook, would be the same price as a N7?
If you do go for a N7 then have a good read around (there's a good thread on the OcUK forums about it), as there have been build quality issues with it.

That's massively underestimating how good a kindle is for reading. A tablet won't be replacing a book but a kindle does.
