I am looking to do my direct access motorbike test in January(my old dear wants to buy the course/test for my 25th birthday in december).

I used to have a DT50, then a DT125 but that was a few years ago now

I am looking at going for a 600cc bike to begin with, is that daft? I did look at the older CBR/VFR400 but im 6ft and a few mates reckon they are pretty small bikes plus they said I will end up wanting more power with a few months.

I was considering either an R6, GSXR 600 or a ZX6R Ninja. Are these a wise or crazy choice?

I only intend on paying upto a maximum of £1500 for it really as I will need other money to buy new gloves, helmet etc

Same as a car, itl only go as fast as you want it to, just don't act a dick head on it and you'll be fine

Insurance is the killer for bike choices. Don't listen to your mates who think you should get something bigger than a 600 for your first bike. They are plenty fast enough to keep you happy.

Hornet 600 is a good place to start imo.

I love little bikes and looking to get a ZXR400 for track work along with my RS250. But they are physically small bikes and I'm 5ft7. I just find them more rewarding to ride.

I've got a CBR600 F Sport as my road bike and i've had an R1 previous to that. I'm considering forgetting about road bikes ad sticking to track but know i'll miss the social side of it, so may end up going a different route with road bikes, something like a Buell XB9.

Like i said though, you can't go far wrong with a Hornet 600. Comfy for all sizes, with enough poke to get you banned and its a Honda so bullet proof and plenty of parts available. End of the day its your choice, but test ride some before you make a choice

depends on your age, if you are under 21 its a 125cc but over 21 its any size bike. after 2 years of holding a licence for a 125 your licence changes so you can ride any size bike.

but be warned the laws are changing in january

its all explained on the dvla's web site though.........

I did it originally probably about 5 years ago so think I need to retake it prior to doing the course.

But yes Gaz thats the idea, tip up for 1 week and be able to ride away on a 600CC if you like. you will take the test on 500cc bikes iirc aslong as over 21

Cbr 600 would be an ideal choice to get back into riding tbh, still quite a quick bike but nice seating position etc, i used to have a cbr 400, im 6ft4 and it was a bit to small tbh

I went from a CBR125 to a CBR600RR after I passed my test. As already said, they only go as fast as you make them!

Not 100% true btw. If you pass the restricted test then you can get anything upto 33bhp or most bikes can be restricted to that.

But a gd one is a sv650 or hornet 600 or bandit 600. Depends what you want really.

IMO It'd be best to start on something smaller than a 600, 400 maybe or even a 250 and spend the saved cash on a top-notch lid & leathers. Can always shift the 250 on after a few weeks for a 600 then. (My Dad's brother swapped a 2002 Honda CBR250 for a 1999 Suzuki GSXR 750, probably got lucky but it's still something for you to possibly pursue). My 2 cents!

Me and my mate passed our tests,
I jumped straight on a gsxr600 and he jumped on his 600 hornet,
Can only go as fast as you roll that throttle!

Sweet cheers guys.

Will look into a few bikes and test a few to see which I prefer.

Do really love the older CBR400 Babyblade so might be tempted for one of them
