Hi

One of my security cameras, currently operating via wifi is a bit intermittent because of the distance it is from the router. It's getting a fairly low signal and drops out a lot.

It's attached in the region of the garage and there's power sockets in there, so I can either go down the homeplugs or extender route. I'm just wondering which people thought would be best? Currently I'm swaying towards homeplugs and wiring the bastard in so I'm not relying on good reception all the time.

What you think?

Cheers dudes

homeplugs have an excellent success rate from what I've heard, I'd always go down the wired route when possible as its more reliable.

I bought some homeplugs yesterday as wifi signal in the spare room/office/gym is dire on the pc. Pretty good in all honesty, took all of a few minutes to setup and away.

Yes you can. Not sure of the limit, but four isn't a problem.

I'd always go wired over wireless, cheaper to run a reel of cable though, if not home plugs are excellent.

Make sure you get decent homeplugs if you do go that route. I've got the cheaper ones that came with the BT Vision years ago, and they're a bit crap to be honest. I ran a Cat6 cable over the same distance and my download speed went from about 800k to 6mb.

I setup home plugs recently for someone, but turned out to be a nightmare, they had a garage underneath their house which was turned into an office.

What I didn't know about the homeplugs is they have to be on the same mains board and not in an extension lead. Got round the problem by drilling through floor and feeding ethernet cables in the end.

Buy some from maplins mate, can take them back if they don't work then and change for WiFi Extender, you probably cba to re-package and post them back if you buy online Theres some you can plug ethernet cables into and have it hardwired (or Wifi) which i've used multiple times at peoples houses, seem to do the job and are about £30-35.

If its a modern house / not a re-build you should be okay.

The guys house I was in was something out of grand designs, he had 3 main boards and I was out of my depth with wondering as to WTF was going on

Yeah, I am guessing it should all be on the same one, there's nothing funny going on where the elec box is or anything. I'll pop to maplin on the way home, one nearby.

Well, it wouldn't be impossible, but certainly not as easy as plugging a plug in here and there. The less drilling the better.

I would buy homeplugs tomorrow rather than do that again, it was a bloody nightmare, fuck cables if homeplugs will do the job!

Yeah, homeplugs rock (if they work)

Question, if I use more than a pair, do I need to get one of the hub things?

Nah, on the "TP Link" ones I've used for people you can keep buying singular ones, which work with the double pack you can buy. Theres a button to connect them up on the main one in the router and the one you've just bought.

Honestly no idea how many you can use though, i've only ever done 4 at once.

Ah ok, just thinking that if the one works then I'd probably get another camera and use another set of plugs for that too Want it setting up like Fort Knox then I'm gonna become a hermit and just sit inside watching the perimeter of the house.

TBH, the final straw was when someone let their dog shit on my front garden I know full well who it is, but without hard evidence I'm not gonna start waving my arms about.

I'm with willay on this, use cable where possible. Tried these homeplugs at both my flats - work well to a degree but found a lot of loss of packets which slowed data transfer down.

As Alex has also said, you have to be on the same circuit and they tend to not like extensions leads.

Just been in to Maplins and the only ones they had were the TP Link extenders and you had to use an Ethernet at either end. Is there any that use only wifi?
