Battery had gone and put it on charge, didn't realise water level is empty so I've charged it dry and still doesn't work. Is it likely to be knackered now or should I top up and try charging again?
Is it distilled water that's used?

Older batteries had water in them, seen it more on larger 24v stuff. Had a few screws on top that you take out and can see inside. Id top it up and try charging it again

Yeah it's a 2004 battery and there's things you can unscrew and I can see there's no liquid in there

If its dry you want to fill it up about 1/3 with sulfuric acid, then top it up with deionised or distilled water, battery's don't use just water on its own. Should be able to get both from your local motorfactors for about £15.

pretty much all automotive batterys have deionised water in them, hence lead acid. modern car batterys dont have any way of being topped up as a rule. if youres has means to top up get some deionised water even your local supermarket sells it for steam irons top it up to just over the lead plates and try charging again, but from what you describe youve probable knackerd it and need a new one.

i give you the "maintenance free" battery

Halfrauds link

have you never asked why such a battery has "maintenance free" on it???
this is a hark to the days of old when a battery had to be maintained (topped up) to ensure its servicability - 99% of battery's need no maintenance, but as there are people out their who remember maintaining a battery it has remained.
