No reason why we couldn't have some fancy AJAX thing these days, little pop up like FB, but you can completely turn it off server side so it doesn't slow the page down if you don't want it to. Is there that much demand for instant chat? It is a moderation nightmare tbh

What's lazy about the db poll? I'd prefer that over something more complicated. I can see a bit of a bandwidth issue but we have enough and its not massive amounts of traffic.

Take a look at Node.js if you're going to do it - you've got your own server so can install whatever you like and the tutorial for Sockets.io is a chat platform. Always good to try something new once in a while
