So I work at asda at the minute, I get a decent wage for what I do (not a store job).

I'm bored and looking for a new direction. I can't afford to be an apprentice or to quit and join college, am I stuck? Any ideas?

As Gary said, there's plenty of opportunities around for night and weekend college courses that fit in around work commitments. I'm guessing being in retail though that you don't keep normal working hours?

I went all day Saturday for 12 weeks and then a float night for 4 hours in the week; this night could fit in around my work commitments or double up and do two nights one week if I was working away the next etc. I'm already considering another course next year as I enjoyed this one so much

I do one day a week at Uni so a normal degree is over 5 years. It is hard work but means I earn a normal wage whilst also studying.

What do you do at Asda at the moment? I know a few in the Asda Property Acquisitions and PR team, one of them has a face you want to kick.

I work in the asda George main warehouse on shifts which makes courses hard.

I have a house and gf to support, I earn over £20k at the min with overtime but still don't have a huge cashflow. I couldn't afford a seriously lower wage.

I fancy being a plumber or metal fabricator or something. Something hands on. Which you can't do without on job training.

get the phone book out now, ring all the plumbimg companies in your area, and ask are they taking on. you will struggle. you will struggle even more when you tell them you only went to night school and didnt do a modern apprenticship. There are far too many other, more qualified, more experienced men out there sat at home.

this isnt a dig, nor am I trying to put you off because Im one my self. Its mine, and alot of my friends expirience. In the plumbing trade or other trades.

Im in the same boat, I want a new vocation, but cant afford to change

What about a job in rope access? Become an sparkys mate and start from there, or cleaning widows or gutters etc were there's little access. Or get small van, few rat traps etc and start a pest control business. Some councils don't have this service.

Every year big companies do apprentice training eg Vector aerospace (got down to the last 12 out of 350+ people then year after the last 14...bastard) Qinetiq, british airways etc...decent wages for an apprentice but hard to get the job unless you have an awesome CV and interviewing experience.

Problem with big companies is they require 5 a-cs. If I had those I would have this issue.

Earning over 20k to work in a warehouse, hidden from the general public. Sounds like easy money.

Try the police or fire brigade. Sometimes they have trainee type jobs available every year.
