I'm looking for a device to put TV shows and movies on to be streamed onto my iPad/iPhone.

I looked at the following:

AirStash - http://www.airstash.com/
SeaGate GoFlex Satellite - http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/wireless/seagate-satellite/
Kingston Wi-Drive - http://www.kingston.com/en/usb/wireless
iUSBport - http://www.hypershop.com/iUSBport-by-HyperDrive-formerly-CloudFTP-s/218.htm

The iUSBPort seems to come out on top. I ruled out the SeaGate because it was physically quite a lot bigger than the rest. The Wi-Drive had mixed reviews and I couldn't find a definitive answer about whether or not it would support AVI files.

The AirStash looks good but the storage is limited to SD Cards. The iUSBport seems to be the best all rounder, you can literally use any storage device that has USB, so card readers, memory sticks, USB hard drives etc.

Any thoughts?

Yep - I'm going to take it on my commute every day. So definitely battery powered and as small as possible.

What's the reason for not putting files directly on the iPad?

Couple of reasons.

Mainly because of the file format issue. Most are AVI.

Secondly is that my iPad is only 16GB.

Do these things transcode the files into something the iPad can play?

No, but you can get apps that will play AVI etc. 8player is one example.

Kingston one is absolutely wank, ended up throwing it in the bin, avoid that immediately.
