I need to do some measuring up at work, however the only plan I've got of the building is the 2nd floor (out office) Should I just go by that as I need to do the ground floor and external?

If you're in the building and are there in a capacity which allows you to go looking round and measuring things, ask the caretaker or maintenance guy if he has any record drawings, then get a copy of them.
If that fails then get the tape measure out and do it the hardcore way
