My brother is after some reasonable earphones for xmas.
Any good suggestions for around the £50 mark?

I've been using the iphone 5 ones and I must say i'm bloody impressed. Didn't make much of it at first as a generic car hands free but for films and music, they're decent.

I'm interested in this for my dad, over ear ones (does that make them headphones?)

Got a cheap pair of Klipsch S4's and there aren't too bad; sound a lot better when i use my CMOY though.
Otherwise Senn CX870's or CX500's. The Shure SE102's are suppose to be alright once driven in.

Budget? Where will he be using them?
Grado 60 or 80's would be my choice

Grado's are probably a bit out of budget, closer to the £50 would be better.
They'll maybe be plugged into an iPad occasionaly, won't be used for any hardcore listening. At the same time I'd rather not buy rubbish.

AKG K420/430/450 (K430's tend to get decent reviews and have a few friends that swear by them for iPod listening; personally i thought they were bottom heavy and a bit cack but it was on pair that hadn't been ran in) otherwise Senn 238/218 perhaps (haven't listened to these).
Balling might have a few other ideas......

Sennheisser in ears are good, I've got cx-200's which I've had a few years and they sound just as good at the beats I had with my sensation XL. Don't think much of the new iPhone ones.

Have a look at iGrado. Fantastic pair of headphones for the price. They look and feel cheap (like most bottom end Grado's) but the sound is completely unlike how they look.
Best point about the iGrado's is that it takes almost nothing to drive them.
AKG K430 as Dom mentions is a good bet also. Definitely don't sound as open or 'full' as the iGrado's, but they fold in to a little storage bag and actually fit in a (largish) jacket pocket. Also, the K430's are better in a noisy environment, where the iGrado's don't really shut out anything.
Very impressed with the build quality of the AKG's as well.

Haven't tried them but I would have expected then to be an upgrade to mine and they cost me £30

They still seem to vary from £24:

to £69;

Thats a huge difference
