Saving for a house is going well, but also moving work soon which will mean 130 miles a week as apose to the 30 miles a week I currently do.

Got a 1.7 Puma at the moment, as it was cheap. Just want something cheaper to run etc.

£1200 ish
Diesel
Pref hatchback but not too fussed
Cheap tax/insurance
No older that 2000.
Still look a bit decent.

All I can think of are a 206 or 306 2.0 HDi D-Turbo?

Any other ideas.

What about a 307 HDi?? Can pick them up in budget nowadays.

Unless you get maybe a 307 HDi D turbo, then it probably won't look as good as the 306 HDi D Turbo. But will be newer and probably have less miles.

3 door 306 HDi in moonstone blue with cyclones would be a winner for me.

I have a 306 Dturbo, not a bad car tbf, goes well with the turn of a few spanners and is reliable enough, parts are cheap too for whatever you need, tax is £120 a year and I'm paying £700 for insurance.

What about a Astra diesel? MK3 or 4?

That's why I was looking at those Jamie. Insurance is just under £600. So tax and insurance works out less that insurance alone on the puma.

Stick with the Puma. That sort of mileage, plus increase in cost of diesel at the pump and potential costs of changing cars, e.g. diesel needing a service immediately, odd tyre, increased insurance, you're unlikely to see a saving.

Insurance is £200 cheaper. Tax is £120 for year where as puma is about £120 for 6 month. Service will cost me £30 max and tyres I get cheap as too.

I looked at a 206 that was 120 for year? Maybe newer?

Not sure, mine is a 1998 and it cost me £120 last month to tax it for 6 months. Cars registered before March '01 it goes on engine size, if its registered after it goes on emissions.

X reg and before = £215 for the year, Y reg and after £120 for the year. Just get a clio dCi, £30 tax, cheap as chips to run, won't have a seized rear beam

The pic you posted is of a HDi, better on fuel etc and more reliable than an older XUD engine but can't be fiddled with spanners to make it quicker.

But even with the price of diesel being higher than petrol, £40 worth of diesel will still see more miles than £40 worth of petrol in the Puma.

Yeah there the ones I been looking at the HDi. Not bothered about tinkering with it. Just to get me about and be cheap.
