My sister-in-law's husband has some kind of app on his Samsung phone that gives him the names of stars as he waves his phone around in the air (using GPS I imagine).
Does anyone know if such an app exists for iOS?

Believe its called Google Skymap on the play store. I used to have it on my Desire. Try search for that on iTunes store.

Only alternative I could find on the iPhone was about £15.

I had something like this whereby it shown you patterns and positioning in a live view (based on GPS and direction) and it overlayed that on screen.
let me see if I can find the name of it for you.

The App name you want for IOS is "SkyView Free"
also, ISSLite is good to track the ISS across your sky

I decided to buy the full version of SkyView in the end, and its great that I can also use the full iPad version at no extra cost too.
Never really been into astronomy before, seems quite fascinating.

bit disappointed with skyview, I was hoping it would be augmented reality but its just a starfield image that moves based on phones internal compass

How do you want augmented reality to work when at night you can barely see the stars with your own eyes, how would a phone camera make anything out? It's pretty accurate anyway so just about the same.

That's the point though it would put the stuff in over the top. I know it doesn't add any thing information wise but would be cooler imo to augment it, it's what I was expecting hence my disappointment

The Android skymap is an awesome app to pass the time whilst night fishing.
Saw Mars last March, and seen the ISS a few times.
