I was hit by a car on Friday night and the driver did a runner. I managed to track down the driver and I found him on Facebook. I sent him a message saying if he gave me £500 then I wouldn't go to the police.
Is that illegal? Not sure if that's like blackmail or reverse bribery

I'll be honest. You're not far off. But I wasn't drunk.
I was having an argument with the guy and the passenger because he nearly hit me when he was going far too fast round a near blind corner on a road. The passenger said, "Next time you're infront of the car I will run you over!"
I wasn't going to take that so I called his bluff and stood infront of the car. Unfortunately he called mine and floored it towards me I had to jump on the bonnet to avoid being hit. He kept driving with me on the car so I had to throw myself off it. I hit the ground and tumbled but other than a few bruises and cuts i'm all good.

If that was ever to be brought up you could just tell the police you only said that to make sure it was the right guy. If he accepts go to the police and show them his reply.

Unless there's any decent evidence of it happening then it didn't really happen. I would ignore you but keep a record. Therefore not incriminating myself but having evidence against you.

I had 2 friends with me who saw the whole thing. There might be cctv too.
Also because I mentioned money in a Facebook mail then there's a record of that. The only thing that might work in my favour is that I was angry and still a little drunk when I said that to him.
