Thinking of getting a new car, had the punto ages now, I dont really use it cause I have my van, the only time I use it is if Im going a distance or if me and Rach are away for the weekend. I fancy a change and a bloke I did some work for had an old S8 on the drive, took me for a ride in it and I loved it, with a private plate on I think its mega cool, exactly the kind of think Im after. So Im thinking of having a look at this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-S8-4-2-auto-quattro-2000-W-/321055068459?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4ac05f912b

what is the 4.2 engine like? is it reliable enough? the one I went in had 185k on it so simmilar millage, it didnt rattle or smoke and was as strong as an ox. Im well aware its gonna twat petrol and cost a fortune to service.

If it lasts 2 years then something major does go wrong, I can scrap it or sell it knowing it was only £3k and I can say Ive had one. The other option is a BMW 750I Thoughts?

Nice car if you're not planing to pile on the miles, I'd have one.

There's a lot of choice as well although I would guess there's not much to differentiate them on spec, they should all be fairly well appointed.

If it breaks, you'll need to buy a new car or re-mortgage your house.

If it breaks Il cut my losses and see it as 3 grand spent on something Ive always wanted and hopfully enjoyed. my mind is pretty much made up now lol. just how bad is 20mpg though? Bear in mind its only used for pleasure is it really a problem? cant see it bothering me personaly but what do people with simmilar cars think?

If you love the car and you have always wanted it, MPG is not an issue

20mpg sounds worse than it is.

Say you're used to 25mpg then you'd only get 5 miles less for every gallon you used.
So say the S8 has a 17 gallon tank, that's only 85 miles of a difference on a full tank.

There's no guarantee someones house won't fall down.

I took a risk with the corrado and its been fine, cheaper than buying a modern low mileage sporty car.

Will you fix/fit things yourself, thats the biggest saving in car ownership really

An A8 is on a totally different level to a fucking Corrado in terms on electrical faults that it will pick up

thing that would put me off is MPG

Your likely to get about 250 miles to over £100

So example a run to chester from st helens and back could cost you £40 in fuel

Probably less. And if you drive to get MPG then surely an S8 isn't the car for you

Someone has to own them, in fact all these so called risky cars are owned and used by someone.

Buy it and try it imo, the good things about cars that are starting to bottom out on price is you can always sell them after 6months to a year and not of lost too much money, unless the battery explodes and the engine falls out (which is always a worry)

cant really go wrong for £3k i like the 750's also
they are worth quite a bit in parts so not a total loss if it does go badly wrong
