So I've set dad's PC up and intended to get him using Outlook for his 3 email accounts. 2 x Hotmail (1 x .com and 1 x .co.uk) and 1 x ntlworld.com.
However, non of the accounts seem to work at all. Using the online mailbox I have enabled POP/IMAP and have all the correct settings, particularly for ntlworld.com. No luck.
Hotmail is proving even stranger, syncing up ok the first time then throwing up errors which seems to be a notorious problem with Windows 7 and/or 64-bit. This is just beyond me as both Hotmail and Outlook at Microsoft.
I use Mozilla Thunderbird and never have such problems but wanted to try and steer clear of 3rd party software but looking like I've got no choice.
Is there any alternatives to Mozilla, from the likes of Google, Opera etc?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
P.S. I've tried a completely fresh install of the whole Office Home & Business 2010 package to no avail.

Says Hotmail has to be POP but not sure this is wise based on Dad using his phone etc.
Anyway to make Hotmail IMAP through Thunderbird?

For what outlook does, nothing beats it.
Have you tried setting hotmail up as an exchange account?
A pop account is about as simple as you can get, if that's not working something else it causing it, won't be outlook. Any firewall software?

Why? No need if you're running W7/W8 as the inbuilt firewall is fine. If you need more control then use 'Windows 7 Firewall Control'.
Either way, switch that off and then see what happens. Also on your ntlworld account (it's basically Gmail rebranded), make sure you have POP3 enabled otherwise nothing will work.
Edit - Also Outlook 2010 should automatically fill in the correct mail server details when you add a new Hotmail account. If need be follow a guide (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/17328/add-hotmail-live-email-accounts-to-outlook-2010/).

And you're using the settings here - VM Ntlworld email settings?
Can you ping or tracert pop3/smtp.ntlworld.com ok?
(do the above with your firewall switched off)

I've set up an ntlworld account that said pop was enabled but it wasn't receiving any email. Just disabled reenabled and it worked lovely. Windows live mail integrates better with hotmail though and does pop accounts

One Hotmail seems to have started working.
NTLWorld is working ok although "syncronizing to subscribed folders" was on 6 minutes remaining, then 8, then 12 and now 18.
Haven't tried his last hotmail. Bloody weird this is.

I've also disabled his iPhone to delete mail from server as thought that might be playing silly buggers with it.

Trouble is with that it deletes mail from the main server e.g. no back up, no?

Gmail accounts have so much storage I just set them to never delete. The inbox online is the backup.

Yeah, just set this to delete from mail server when deleted from Deleted Items. Didn't realise you could do it with POP. It seems to be working better with POP.
Now just the final Hotmail to pull, if that fails, will use the Windows Essentials Mail thing instead for POPdePOPPOP everything.
Cheers pow and others.

The hotmail account should work as exchange now too since outlook.com?

Gmail supports exchange activesync, its not an exchange mailbox... So you cant setup gmail and hotmail in outlook as exchange accounts (as far as I know).

Seemed to all work then was getting a well known Hotmail with Outlook Connector issue.
Turns out if you put them in separate Send/Receive Groups it sorts the issue.
POP worked so much better than IMAP. Going to change the settings on my NTLWorld and switch I think
