Are these illegal full stop, or are there loopholes to this law?

Just wondered whether I could upgrade the candle power in the Cougar to HIDs or not.

I think I have 'projector' style headlight lenses if that makes any difference?

It's a grey area.

Jambo has a wealth of knowledge so hopefully he'll be able to tell you for sure.

The documentation on it is pretty ambiguous.

My car passed MOT with HID's fitted, I've not been stopped for having them in the two years they've been fitted either.

Iirc really you need xenon/hid projectors inside the headlamps, clear lense covers, a self levelling system (sensors on the struts) and headlamp washers.

Thats about as far as my knowledge goes. I highly doubt police will pull you if you already have projector lenses and headlamp washers (and they're aligned correctly).

It's only when people put them in normal halogen headlamps (think of corsa b lights), that problems occur.

I had 6k hid's in my puma with halogen projectors and had no issues (other than a weird beam pattern on the road). I took them out at mot time though, only took 10 minutes.

To be legal, you need to have self levelling lights (or suspension), headlight washers, and headlights made for use with xenon lamps, not halogen.

Its not an MOT failure, but they aren't legal. Much like window tints on the front windows.

Yes, MOT is totally different to construction and use.
