out of what settings? what welder have you got a clarke? or something else?

i have a clarke and for chassis work i set it at maximum 1 and wire speed around 7 buts thats my preference etc..

Guy I work with is a great welder (years of experience) he welds on 1 also but with a wire speed of around 4 on a sealey super mig welder

He only welds on 1 for general welding patches ect adjusts the setting depending on what he is welding, he's taught me how to weld I find those settings work well too

As far as I know. And correct me if I'm wrong but for car welding it should be as low amps as possible??

Don't know why. I weld on 1 with a wire speed of 2 usually. I'm slow but steady haha

as i say sean pretty much same as me , only on my welder i have min max setting and 1 and 2 again adjust wire speed to what you feel is right its a personal preferance

everything depends on welder and job.
Welding clean area? Welding rusty area? body panel welding? chassie welding?

It a matter of listen to how the weld sounds and change you setting to get it right.
I like to run high amp and trigger on and off, that way your 100% getting good penertration all the way threw plus a good clean flat weld.

As said depends on welder, we have 3 at work, all three are different and settings on all three are different. Just play with it until it looks and sounds good. Chassis is very thick so unless its extremly rotten you won't be blowing holes.

Welder I have is a BOC180. Easy does chassis stuff on most cars. As said depends on the thickness of metal and all in all your skill lol

best way to set up a welder is to have a play on some off cuts first all sets are differant and depends on what gas mix, wire size, wire type. the hotter the better to ensure good penatration. if your blowing holes its to hot so back it off abit, weld in stitches 1" at a time. car metal work is all fairly light gauge, and is easy to see if the weld has penatrated by looking for discolouring on the underside of the weld. i was taught a good weld being made sounds like bacon sizzling in a pan.

the bigger the set you get the more you will be able to do with it. as andy said gasless ones are awfull. i picked up a second hand set 140 amp industrial boc (murex) for £100. look for dial wire speed control and power settings rather than switched as you'll have finer control. also look for euro torches as parts are cheeper. high duty cycle rating is good. search for your local boc service centre and welding supply companies as they some times do part ex units and recon ones.

got it for £20 off a mate as he had no idea how to use it,

Yeah i had a look on eBay and they're around £45 delivered. Do they have changeable batterys? I know the solar panels charge them but he hasn't used the kit in over a year..

I was a welder for about 10 years and never once came across 2 welding sets that were the same - IE one setting on one is completely different on another set. As said try on some scrap first as the setting mentioned above may not be the same for your set.

I used to use a water cooled Miller set and it was the dogs bollocks lol.
