So, ive smashed my car up after hitting ice and rolling it into a ditch (im fine suprisingly!)
It has a private plate on that id like to keep but im unsure what i need/can do.
The car isnt written off as yet but its wrecked so its only a matter of time. If i want to retain the plate, i need to do what and when? Before i accept the settlement offer? What if i buy the car back to split and sell parts off? Can i wait till ive got it back and put it on retention or not?
Cheers in advance

Put it on retention before you put the claim in.

Get it off as soon as possible, there's no reason to wait.

Get the paperwork done now. I had a private plate on my bike when it was written off. The company actually held onto it for me whilst they were waiting for the plate to be transferred as I didn't start the process straight away, but you might not be so lucky.

Right, this is what I'm doing! Sound ok to you guys?
I'm going to the dvla on Monday to get the plate on retention using the v5 etc. in the meantime the cars going to be written off so I've told the insurance what I'm doing in terms of the plate and they'll have to wait till I get the new v5 sent to them after I receive it. Ill also pop a copy of the old one in aswell so they know its been correctly insured etc. they should then release the money for the car.
Sound ok?

Make sure you grab the tax disc, as that was one of the hold ups for me. I had to get the insurance company to send the tax disc back to me.
